Project Profile: Hertz DIA

Denver, Colorado

The Hertz Rent a Car at Denver International Airport has 1,300 rental vehicles requiring cleaning and fueling every day.

That’s why, when the business’s fueling systems needed an upgrade due to the age and reliability of the existing equipment, Hertz Senior Program Manager of Fuel Systems and Compliance Drew Lazazzera turned to a company he knew he could count on.

“This was a challenging project due to its location on DIA property,” Lazazzera said. “CGRS was not the lowest bidder for this project; however, due to your reputation and our previous work experiences together, Hertz made the decision to select CGRS as the most qualified bidder.”

CGRS has provided environmental and compliance services to Hertz in the past as well as installed an aboveground storage tank for the company in downtown Denver a couple of years ago. Lazazzera said it was “the ease of working with (CGRS personnel)” that convinced him to hire CGRS again.

The challenge at Hertz DIA was to remove and replace the following while allowing Hertz to continue cleaning and fueling its fleet of rental cars:

  • All tank top equipment for five 18,000-gallon underground storage tanks (UST)
  • Existing fuel piping with new flex piping
  • Nine islands, eight with one unleaded, dual-hose dispenser each and one island with one diesel dual-hose dispenser, as well as all under-dispenser containments
  • Replace the old electrical and plumbing for the entire fueling system

To complete the mission, CGRS divided the work into two phases, performing all of the work – including pouring concrete, scheduling inspections and starting up the system – on two of the five tanks before beginning the same work on the remaining three tanks. The CGRS team began the original project in late September and completed it in mid-December. They returned after the holidays to perform change-order work at the customer’s request, which they completed in two days.

From the permitting stage to the post-completion change order, the CGRS team impressed Lazazzera with their professionalism, knowledge, go-to attitude and quality of work.

“Of course there were some ‘hiccups,’ but that is to be expected of any project of this magnitude,” Lazazzera said. “But it was how CGRS responded to these issues that sets you apart from the ‘normal contractors’ in our industry. I am very pleased with the final product that I got to inspect (recently).

“Everyone at the company was great to deal with. … You have a great team and I look forward to working with them again in the near future.”
